Hand Painted Sage Green Wooden Keepsake Box with Botanical Interior

Soft, timeworn olive green, aged brass and a little unexpected botanical detail hidden inside — this is one of those pieces that can quietly find a place almost anywhere in a home.

I refinished this solid pine box by hand, layering the painted finish with darker aging until I reached the muted, earthy green you see today. I updated the hardware with warm antique-brass-toned side handles, added decorative corner feet and finished the front with a small label holder that can be personalized with whatever you choose to keep inside.

Open the lid and the box changes completely. The interior is decoupaged in my own custom botanical design, created specifically for my work and not sourced from commercially available decoupage paper. Tiny wildflowers, ferns and trailing greenery fill the inside in beautifully faded, earthy colors that complement the aged exterior.

I kept the lid intentionally simple and completely flat. It leaves the box open to however you want to use it — for treasured letters and photographs, cards, keepsakes or everyday things you’d simply rather not have sitting out. It can also be used as a small riser in a collected tabletop or shelf display, with books, a lamp, a plant or another favorite piece placed on top.

The original pine construction remains visible, including the corner joinery, and the painted and aged finish has natural variations throughout. This isn’t intended to have the uniform finish of a newly manufactured box; each surface was finished individually by hand.
