Hand Painted Romantic Madonna Figure

There are certain pieces that quietly ask for a second chance.

When I found this paper mache Madonna, I loved the gentle expression on her face. Rather than trying to restore her to her original factory finish, I chose to completely reimagine her into a softer, more romantic piece that feels at home among collected antiques, old books, flickering candlelight, and treasured heirlooms.

Her gown was hand painted in a muted ballet slipper pink before being carefully antiqued to bring out the texture and folds of the original fabric. Her cloak was custom color mixed by hand into a rich, moody plum and finished with layers of antiquing to create the appearance of aged velvet. The head covering was softened with warm taupe tones, while vintage-style lace was individually cut, stained, and reapplied by hand to complete the transformation.

I intentionally preserved her original facial features. They have a quiet gentleness that I didn’t want to lose, allowing the newly painted textiles and finishes to tell the rest of her story.

This piece began as a commercially produced paper mache figure. Every visible finish you see today—from the custom mixed colors to the hand-applied aging techniques—was completed by me over several days. While similar base figures may exist, this artistic transformation is uniquely my own and cannot be duplicated exactly.

• There is a small tear and hole on the back of the cloak from a previous halo attachment. This has been photographed and reflected in the pricing.
