Salt cellars, also known as salt dips or open salts, were common tableware before the rise of individual salt shakers. They functioned as shared containers for salt, with guests using a small spoon or knife to take a pinch. Premium salt cellars frequently included cobalt blue glass liners to protect the silver from corrosion caused by salt. English EPNS salt cellars featuring colored glass liners were popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The rich cobalt blue hue was especially admired for its striking color and visual appeal. These cellars were crafted in styles ranging from simple sophistication to intricate ornamentation, reflecting Victorian and Edwardian design trends.
